Travel Writing

*NO AI TRAINING

For much of my professional career, my writing focused on the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries. From 2011 through the end of 2021, I was the author of a popular travel column called Travel Advisory, which was published bimonthly in Merrimack Valley Magazine, a lifestyle publication covering northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire (circ.75,000). The magazine ceased publication in December 2021.

The column generally covered destinations within driving distance of the magazine’s readership, such as Newport, Rhode Island, but I also wrote about topics like travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, after hurricane Maria, Bermuda, and other destinations that are farther away, like New York City, Montreal, and Quebec’s little known wine region.

I’ve also written travel features for other publications including the now defunct The Bean Magazine, a nationally circulated quarterly that focused on coffee, tea, cafe culture, and the arts.

For a few years I worked as an editor at the travel website TripAdvisor. I worked as a copywriter and did marketing and public relations work for the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism as well as for private travel and tour companies, hotels, resorts, and wineries. My writing has also appeared in various Fodor’s and Frommer’s travel guides.

Although I don’t often write travel articles these days, I feel that my experience writing about places has helped me become a better writer in general, especially when it comes to fiction.
